Sparky may have been slight, and although he did not like contact sports, he was aggressive; boys challenging him in a pickup hockey game were often surprised at his will to win. He played hard, so hard that one of his shots on goal gave Shermy Plepler a concussion. Another day, in a touch-football game on James Avenue, while covering little Tommy Hewson on a pass play, he trod on the younger boy’s heel, dropping him to the pavement, and would never forget seeing Tommy “getting up with his wrist twisted at an impossible angle," just as Shermy, his forehead bloodied by Sparky’s shot, would “never forget how scared Sparky was as he helped me home for medical aid."
